JIMMY (Red, Hot & Blue) by Cat Johnson

Social butterfly and a soldier in the Special Forces—a match made in…bed.

Special Forces gave Jimmy Gordon the undercover skills of a chameleon, but nothing prepared him for Amelia Monroe-Carrington, the governor’s hot, redheaded daughter. She thought she was seducing a banquet waiter, and he let her. His next assignment pulled him from her bed and into the worst six months of his life. Images of Lia were what kept him alive imprisoned in Kosovo, and even now he’s home and recovered, she’s still in his head.

For her father’s political career, Lia has always done the appropriate thing, right down to dating a senator’s son. Her one rebellious act, an incredible night with a totally inappropriate man, ended when he disappeared. And then never called. When they unexpectedly meet again, the pull between them is stronger than ever, tempting Lia to stop sacrificing her own happiness for the family dynasty.

Warning: Contains incredible one-night-stand sex hot enough to withstand time, distance, and some really nasty terrorist torture.

A G rated excerpt from
Jimmy

“Don’t all you boys look cute.” Matt’s voice came through the communicator implanted in Jimmy’s ear and interrupted his internal soliloquy about his hatred of the shirt and tie. The mocking only seemed to make the discomfort seem worse since Matt was safely locked away in the surveillance van wearing his own nice comfortable clothes. “I’ve got eyes and ears up and running. Talk to me.”
“Gordon, Jimmy.” In the usual, preset order, Jimmy checked in first and confirmed his receipt of
Matt’s communication, such as it was, about having audio and visual surveillance in place.
“Gordon, Jack.”
“Williams.”
“Bull.”
“BB.”
The rest of the team checked in, except for the commander.
“Commander?” Matt’s question came through Jimmy’s earpiece.
Jimmy could see the commander across the room in his own penguin suit, looking just as uncomfortable as he felt.
“Yeah, I’m here, Coleman. Damn it. Let’s get this show on the road. This tie is killing me.”
At least rank didn’t have its privileges on this op. Enjoying the thought immensely, Jimmy smiled.
“You guys better go into the kitchen and find out what you’ll be passing,” Matt warned.
“You mean besides gas?” Obviously pleased with his own wit, Jack beamed. He looked comfortable in his position behind the bar. If only Jimmy had been lucky enough to be assigned the job of bartender instead of stuck out here trying to play waiter.
He heard a round of snickers through his earpiece in response to Jack’s juvenile joke.
“Ha, ha, Jack. Very funny.” Judging by his tone, Matt was not amused. “You’re all lucky. Tonight is butler service, just passed hors d’oeuvres. But I’m serious about this. People are going to ask what’s on your tray. Take it from me, you’ll feel like an idiot if you don’t know.”
Jimmy had a feeling they might actually be better off with Bull on the communications console and Matt out here. He really was the only one who knew what the hell he was doing as a waiter. All of their training for Special Task Force Zeta didn’t prepare them one little bit for butler service.
Damn, did people even have butlers nowadays? Jimmy saw the first guest arrive, and judging by the look of him, these people did. “Guests are arriving.” He turned his head to face the wall as he spoke and kept his voice low as a few more people filtered into the room. Then, always alert, Jimmy went back to visually sweeping the room.
“I’m ready.” He heard Jack’s voice and a champagne cork pop simultaneously.
The commander nodded once. “Let’s roll, boys.”
Their leader looked impatient to get this assignment over and done with. Jimmy couldn’t agree more.
Trey, Bull and BB all headed toward the entrance to the kitchen. Jimmy decided he better follow and see what the hell waited for them on this butler service crap. When he arrived in the rapidly filling kitchen crowded with cooks and now his teammates, a counter covered in big silver trays containing tiny food greeted him. The team lined up. Being in the military, they were all extra skilled at waiting in line. It was the next part Jimmy was concerned about as the chef shoved a tray at BB.
“Herb-encrusted goat cheese.” The chef’s words were spewed with every bit as much disdain and authority as a drill instructor barking orders to a new recruit at boot camp. Maybe this wasn’t going to be as far out of their realm of familiarity as Jimmy had anticipated.
BB picked up the tray with two slightly unsteady hands. Turning in slow motion toward the door, he tenuously balanced the tray as if it held a nuclear bomb.
Trey stepped forward.
“Bruschetta,” the chef barked with another shove.
“Bru-whatta?” Trey frowned down at the little red triangles laid out in an artful display in front of him.
The look the chef shot him could have wilted the green leafy things garnishing Trey’s tray. Trey’s tray, that’s funny. Jimmy laughed to himself at his own little joke. He’d have to find a way to use that later.
“It’s chopped tomatoes with basil on garlic toast points,” the chef explained none too patiently.
“Oh.” Trey grabbed his tray with one hand, raised a brow and then left the kitchen.
“Don’t piss off the chef, whatever you do. I had one throw a butcher knife at me once.” Matt’s voice issued that warning to them all, unbeknownst to the chef in question.
Great. Now Jimmy had to worry about the chef throwing things at him on top of terrorists blowing up the rich guys who were going to be asses to them for not knowing what bruschetta was.
Bull stepped forward as the chef shoved another tray forward.
“Wild mushrooms and brie on sourdough toast.”
Hmm. Who knew toast was so highbrow? It was in two of these things already. Jimmy had been eating toast all his life. He hadn’t known he was so classy.
Bull took the mushroom toast things and looked like a storybook giant carrying a doll-sized tray out of the kitchen.
Uh oh. Jimmy was up next. He stepped up to the stainless steel table.
“Hot parsnip soup.” The tray slid toward him as the chef announced its contents.
Uh oh, again. His silver and very slippery tray contained about twenty tall shot glasses filled with a whitish liquid that he thought looked too much like semen to even contemplate drinking, or eating or whatever. But that wasn’t the least of it. How was he supposed to carry this without those shot glasses sliding all over the place?
The commander was behind him, so he stepped aside to magnanimously allow him to go first. “Sir?”
“Oh no, Gordon. That one’s all yours. And don’t call me sir.”
Under the impatient scrutiny of the chef, Jimmy cringed a bit and picked up the tray with shaking hands. He could shoot the bull’s-eye out of a target with a hand so steady he could perform brain surgery with it, but carry a tray full of semen-soup-filled shot glasses and he was…well…shot.
Jimmy somehow got himself out the door without spilling, although the whole lot of glasses shifted slightly to the left, along with the white lace doily that may look nice, but did dick to help him keep from spilling. He paused to scope out the situation in the rapidly filling room and nearly got knocked into by a guest as he did.
That was it. He couldn’t keep his eye peeled for the bad guys if he was staring at this gross soup in a vain effort to not accidentally dump any. Jimmy gingerly walked over to his brother at the bar. “I’m leaving this tray here with you before I spill it.”
“What the hell is it?” Jack glanced at the contents of the glasses.
“Parsnip soup.”
Jack winced. “Well, it looks like—”
Jimmy held up his hand to stop Jack before he went any further with his most likely X-rated description. “I know what it looks like. Just tell the guests what it is if they ask. I’m going to do a walk- through and see what’s up.”
“All right, but nobody’s going to drink that shi—I mean stuff.” Jack censored himself just as a couple walked up to the bar and into earshot.
Jimmy smiled. This gig might not be too bad. It would definitely be something to talk about over drinks later. Until then, he’d just keep dumping his trays with Jack so he wouldn’t have to deal with them.
Proud of his stroke of genius, Jimmy was still congratulating himself when he saw one hot number walk into the room on the arm of one of the VIPs they were there to protect. An old dude he sincerely hoped was not her date. That would be a shame, since she was hotter than that soup he’d ditched and a hell of a lot more attractive.
Her red hair was pulled up to reveal the sexiest porcelain-white neck and shoulders he’d ever seen.
Her legs seemed to stretch nearly up to her armpits. Her black, strapless dress slit up the side nearly hip-high was pretty nice to look at too. Big eyes, which he could see from across the room were as blue as the cool pond on his mama’s farm, completed this vision of walking, talking sex that would fulfill any man’s fantasy.
Wow. Good thing he’d ditched that tray. Otherwise, he definitely would have dropped it when he saw her.

Excerpt for BULL (Red, Hot & Blue Book 10) Now on Preorder!

When the going gets tough, the tough go out with a bang…
Spec Op “Bull” Ford is as big as his nickname. His team, the civilians he protects, whether they know it or not, all depend on him. But beneath his stony exterior beats the heart of a caring man—unless he’s crossed.
Between her job as professional harpist and fending off an ex-boyfriend who won’t take the hint, Marly feels like a circus juggler. She doesn’t need some oversized, overzealous security guard accusing her of being a terrorist—as if a five-foot-nothing woman in a ball gown could threaten anyone.
Though when the real terrorists strike, she’s more than grateful to have Bull at her side…or on top, which certainly makes what could be her last breaths memorable.
But after Bull takes the brunt of the explosion, Marly is left with feelings for a man who doesn’t remember who she is. And by the time the red-hot memories come flooding back, the trail to her heart may have gone cold.
Warning: Contains explosive sexual encounters—literally!

EXCERPT (G)
“Bull.” Matt’s voice seemed to explode out of Bull’s eardrum.
He jumped and turned toward the wall so the other guests in the room wouldn’t see him talking to himself. “Jesus, Matt. You scared the crap out of me. What?”
“The threat’s been bumped up. It looks like it’s fucking real. We’re on our way to you now.”
“Where’s it coming from?” Bull’s heart kicked into high gear.
“It’s right up your alley, buddy. Chatter on the lines indicates a bomb.”
“I swept the building—”
“It’s hidden somewhere inside the walls.”
“What? How?” Bull had spoken rather loud and got a few stares from the guests nearest him.
“There were workmen there six frigging months ago repairing the plaster. One of them has suspected terrorist ties. I was bored and started to check back just for fun.”
Bull never did understand Matt’s idea of fun, but it was a damn good thing he’d decided to have some fun tonight. A work crew six months ago had planted the bomb? This had been in the works for a while. Organization like that meant these guys were serious.
“Now the original threat makes sense.” Matt continued, “It was some sort of riddle about the walls of Jericho coming down. No one took it seriously until I found the record of the crew that worked on the walls.”
“What do you want me to do until you get here?” He didn’t want to start a panic, and he really didn’t want to tip his hand.
If the bomb was built to trigger with a detonator, that device could be held by anyone inside or outside the building. Letting that person know the good guys had discovered the plot would force the bomber’s hand. Bull reevaluated the guests and staff. There weren’t many people here. It was still early. That was good. The terrorist would want the biggest bang for his buck and wait for a full house.
“Get the senator out, first of all. We’ll never live it down if we let him get killed. But don’t let him know anything. Don’t let anyone know anything yet.”
“Affirmative.” Bull moved closer to the senator. “Sir. Excuse me for interrupting. I need to speak with you. Now.”
When Dickhead—the frigging cocky idiot—looked annoyed that the security he’d insisted on being up his ass all night had bothered him, Bull added, “It’s urgent.”
It must have hit him something was wrong. His eyes went wide and he opened his mouth. Bull grabbed his arm and pulled him out of the room before he could blow their one advantage—the element of surprise. The guests, and probably the terrorist, would guess Bull was security, but no one but the Senator knew he came attached to a special task force highly trained for situations exactly such as this. And no one knew the good guys had discovered what the bad guys were up to.
Outside the building, Bull did a visual sweep of the area. It was deserted except for a few valets waiting around to park any new arrivals’ cars. Even so, Bull pulled the senator to where they could speak without being heard.
“What’s happening?” Dickhead’s voice rose, tinged with panic.
He didn’t feel comfortable telling Dickhead the truth, didn’t trust him to keep his cool or keep quiet, so he’d have to make up some cock-and-bull story. The man was probably a Chicken Little—the type to run around screaming at the slightest provocation. No way Bull could tell him there was very likely a bomb hidden inside the walls of the building where his hoity-toity associates still were.
“Nothing yet.” That wasn’t exactly a lie. “It’s just a precaution.”
“If it’s nothing, then why the hell did you drag me out here?”
Bull clenched his jaw and mentally talked himself down from telling the senator what he thought about him. “There’s new information about the threat. My orders are to keep you out of the building until further notice.”
They should evacuate. The commander would probably have Bull trip the fire alarm. That would clear the building but wouldn’t tip off the bombers. But until the commander and the team arrived, his orders had been to get Dickhead out, and he’d done that. Now he figured he was free to go unobtrusively search for the bomb and the bombers... If Dickhead would get clear of the damn building and let Bull do his job.
The senator scowled. “What am I supposed to do? Stand out here in the driveway like an idiot?”
He was already doing a good job of being an idiot, so that sounded like a good idea to Bull. A long black car pulled up and he recognized Dickhead Junior being helped out of the back seat by the driver. “It looks like your son’s arrived. I’d strongly advise you and he take the car and go elsewhere until the situation has been reevaluated. Somewhere far.”
Like out of the blast zone.
“All right. You have my number?” There must have been something in Bull’s tone or expression, but the senator quit acting annoyed and started to look concerned. Lucky for Bull, Dickhead was a chicken shit and all in for saving his own skin. He gave in.
“Yes, sir.”
“Keep me updated.”

“Yes, sir.” Bull watched Dickhead steer Junior back into the car. He even waited until the vehicle drove off the property, just to be sure. Then he turned on his heel and headed for the entrance.
“Matt, Dickhead and Little Dick are off the property. I’m heading back inside to see if I can spot the trigger man or find evidence of the bomb’s location.”
“Roger that.”
“Matt, we’ve still got civilians inside. Between staff and guests, about two dozen.”
“I know, but until I recheck everyone, we can’t clear them out. One of them could be our tango.”
“Understood.” Inside, Bull heard the harpist begin a new song. “Can you check the harpist?”
“Do you think she’s our tango?”
“No. Just covering all the bases.” He did think it would be a shame if she accidentally got blown up though. Maybe he’d come up with some bogus reason to get her out of there once Matt had cleared her.
“Okay. Give me a few min—shit, Jack! Take it easy on the turns. You almost knocked the laptop onto the floor. I’m sorry, Bull, but I’m doing the best I can in the back of the van with Gordon up there driving like he’s on the NASCAR circuit. Hold tight. We’ll be there soon. It could still be nothing.”
“Should I ask around? Try to find out where the crew worked on the walls? It might give us a clue of where to start looking.”
There was dead air for a moment and then Matt was back. “The commander says no. Sit tight.”
“Roger that.” Bull sighed.
The one thing he was not all that good at was waiting and doing nothing. He glanced around the room again. The wait staff was comprised of pimple-faced boys. Old men and cleavage-baring women guests, and one petite harpist with reddish brown hair pulled into a sleek, surprisingly sexy ponytail rounded out the full complement of those in attendance. He’d bet his life—he was betting his life actually—not one of them was the terrorist.
He’d have to start his search again now that he had the all-important information from Matt to look at the walls. But this time, he’d have to do it so no one, the bomber in particular, would notice. He remembered a closet on the first floor. It apparently used to be a bathroom. The old cast-iron tub and fixtures were disconnected but still there, surrounded now by cardboard boxes and paint cans. It was obvious one wall had been freshly painted. He’d start there. If he was wrong...well, they’d know soon enough.
He slipped into the closet unnoticed and began running his hands over the surface of the wall, looking for any irregularities.
“Bull!”
He jumped one more time. It must be his being alone, without the team, making him so jumpy. He blew out a breath. “I copy, Matt. What’s happening?”
“There’s no record of a harpist on my list.”
Aw, crap.

May Military Madness

The month of May is only half done and so far, it's been crazy in my little corner of the world. What's happening? Here's a rundown.

I started the month off in Kansas City, MO at the Romantic Times 30th Anniversary Booklovers Convention. There I sported in public for the first time on a grand scale my combat boots in support of the BootCampaign.com (a not-for-profit that raises awareness and funds for organizations who support our military). Check out the website for more details on the organization but in a nutshell, their goal is to put as many pairs of combat boots on civilians, in all walks of life and all situations, as there are active duty military. For example, there were folks running the Boston Marathon while wearing their BootCampaign combat boots. You get the idea. So in Kansas City, I wore mine as well. First for the formal gala with my American Flag corset and full-length red ball skirt, and then again for the big Saturday book signing with, I was thrilled to find and buy these in a shop across from our hotel, these fab lace socks I found. The girly-girl in me wanted to fem up the combat boots, what can I say! Here's a close-up pic of the boots/socks from the book signing and my "Ask Me About My Boots" T-shirt purchased from the BootCampaign.com site. For more on the saga of my boots, including the breaking in process, see http://catjohnson.net/fun-stuff/the-boot-campaign/ .

Cat Johnson Combat BootsAsk Me About My Boots - Cat Johnson

As it turns out, it was good I had those boots with me since though it was in the 80s when we landed in Kansas City, and I wore flipflops outside the second day we were there, but Thursday, May 2, it was snowing sideways in some freak storm that lasted for hours. Though being a New Yorker, I knew it wasn't sticking, not with the ground so warm from the past hot days, the California folks were on the phone with their spouses freaking out that we'd never be able to fly home on Sunday because of this snow and the Aussies were outside playing in it, tears in their eyes because it was the first snow they'd ever seen in their lives. All in all, a memorable event all around.

Next, I arrived home to more military madness. Copy edits on my Kensington 83K words Oklahoma Nights series, Book 2, TWO TIMES AS HOT, about my hero from that series Lieutenant Colonel Logan Hunt. And waiting for me as well was proofing of the final print galleys for the print release of my Samhain Red, Hot & Blue series A PRINCE AMONG MEN. While working on those, guess what else arrived in the inbox? Edits on not one but 2 more Red, Hot & Blue stories--BULL and MATT. Along with the corresponding cover copy and cover art request forms for both. So that was my life from Monday thru Friday afternoon, when I finally finished all the above and, almost a week late, got to unpack my suitcases from RT on Saturday. But the good news is, I have a sneak peek for you of what some of that work yeilded--the cover for BULL! Bull, Matt and The Commander are scheduled to release from Samhain in October, November and December in eBook, to be bundled together in paperback as True Blue sometime in 2014.

Stay tuned!

Why I Write Military Romance by Cat Johnson

For my first post for our brand new military romance blog, I figured I'd better introduce myself and explain how it is I came to be here since some of you know me, and I'm quite sure a lot of you don't...

The Red Hot & Blue series by Cat JohnsonThe Beginning
I started writing military romance back in 2006 because I enjoyed reading it--military romance authors like Suzanne Brockmann were auto-buys and on my keeper shelf. So I asked my editor would she be interested in a military romance from me? (My one published romance at that time was a romantic comedy.) Her answer was definitely, and that's when my Task Force Zeta was born. Why Spec Ops? Because it was around this time that the real life Task Force 145 was in the news for their capture of Al Zarkawi. More importantly, because I am a civilian, I figured it would be safer to create a Special Task Force of my own than to risk writing about a real unit and making a mistake. However, as you'll see, that soon changed.

The Real Men Who Changed Me
Being a born promo 'ho, I thought hey, I'll send my books to the deployed troops and get my name out there. That's when I joined Books for Soldiers and became obsessed, reading the troop requests in the forum, spending hours and countless dollars shipping everything from shower shoes, to DVDs, to Christmas decorations and candy, and yes, books (both my own and others I'd bought at the library used book sale) to the war zone. Then something unexpected happened. I began to get thank you notes by mail and through email. That led to some of these men becoming more than my pen pals, they became consultants on my military books and more, they became some of my best friends and they still are today.
real life 'boots on the ground'

I no longer wanted to focus solely on the elite special operatives that romance readers love so much. I wanted to tell the stories of the boots on the ground such as the real life Army tankers and infantry I'd come to know and love. That's the turn my Red, Hot & Blue series took beginning with A FEW GOOD MEN, based on stories from the real life deployment of my friend in Ramadi. Then came MODEL SOLDIER and A PRINCE AMONG MEN as I wove real life missions in the border provinces of Afghanistan with actual events in the news, with a healthy dose of fictional romance thrown in to satisfy my readers. My consultant always joked he wished he'd had all the sex (or any sex at all) that the characters I'd modeled after him had in my books while deployed! But that's where the delicate balance comes into play--honoring reality while wrapping it in fiction. Besides the serious side of war, and in addition to the love stories I craft, there's also a healthy dose of humor in my books and that is not fictional, because with the camaraderie found among the deployed also comes practical jokes, and teasing, and fun when and where they can grab it.

Why do I write military romance?
Because those in the military, and those who love them, know tomorrow is not guaranteed. They live and they love harder. Faster. With more intensity than we outside of that world can ever hope to understand.

Because civilians such as myself need to get inside the head of a soldier and realize that getting a letter or a package at mail call means everything. That the loneliness of being deployed can be devastating, but at the same time, sometimes the thought of coming home from deployment and having to resume normal life as if they'd never been gone is even more frightening than the war zone. That traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder, and staggering suicide levels among returning troops is a reality that needs to be dealt with as we welcome returning troops home.

That adrenaline is addicting, as is the sense of purpose and belonging these troops get as part of their unit. That they really do want to deploy with their squad. That they really would give their life to save that of the man to their right. That they'd risk life and limb to recover a fallen teammate's lifeless body.

Writing these books, meeting these men, has changed me on a personal level. You can't wake up daily to a "Good morning" message from the war zone in your inbox without being affected. You can't read or watch the news about a downed helicopter or suicide bomber or a threat against our troops or our country from an international leader without holding your breath until the next message comes in from the guy you know in that region.

My hope is to give my readers a level of understanding about what being in the military is like, what loving someone in the military is like, as well as to honor those who serve. I can only hope to do them justice with my craft.
