Of BFFs who really have been around forever

I thought I'd tell you a little about the amazing woman who inspired Casey, the heroine in Call of Duty. While writing Call of Duty, I kept her in mind the entire time. She was going through some pretty crappy times and I hoped to cheer her up. She heroine was even named after her, but she chose the name Casey when the book was contracted.

Linda and I met in the 3rd grade. Our fathers were stationed at Barkesdale Air Force Base. It's a pretty big base, but we ended up living at opposite ends of the same street.  I like to remember that the friendship was immediate and strong. Honestly, I don't remember that part mainly because I don't really have many memories of a time before I met Linda at BAFB.

Linda and I were mostly inseparable for over 3 years. Running up and down the street was normal. We played in groups, we played together. I remember games of "red rover" and "red light, green light" and "Mother may I" in her front year. She had a tree that was great for base. I remember playing at gymnastics in the back yard. And of course, playing at the playground.

Linda was the one who told me about sex. She has an older sister, so we got bare bones details! I still remember sitting on the swings talking about how that couldn't be possible!

And I remember my 6th grade heart breaking when we got transferred to Seymour Johnson AFB in North Carolina. It didn't matter that she'd soon be moving to Carswell AFB in Texas.

This song still makes me think of her and cry.

Those were the days of counting the minutes in long distance phone calls. We made good use of our time!

Skip ahead to high school, when she flew up for my high school graduation. We hadn't seen each other in 6 years, not that anyone could tell.

After the children starting coming (my 1 and her 4), we visited when ever possible

Skip ahead to now. Linda raised 4 wonderful children mostly by herself until she remarried in 2011. Raised 4 amazing kids! She is my hero. I don't know if I've ever told her that. No matter what got thrown at her, she moved forward with an infectiously positive attitude.

These are her 4 kiddos, all adults.

The boys are Joe and Dalton. The girls are Allison and Emily.

And here is her retired Air Force father, the Colonel, with his army officer grandchildren, the Ranger and the pilot.

Through it all, for over 40 years, she's been there for me. No matter how long we go between phone calls.

My BFF.

A true heroine. My hero.

I'll love her always.

Happy reading,

Felicia

Snowed in and blogging

Well, my blogging date went whooshing by last month in a blaze of day job responsibilities. January is a busy month for us as we are preparing for and putting on a statewide conference.

And I was so excited to post last month. Finally, all three books in the Class of '93 trilogy are available for Kindle! I'm very excited that they have been reissued with hot new covers.

Plus, I was anxious to share the news that my favorite Ranger is back CONUS safe and sound!! Yes, he'll be going O-CONUS again, that's what he does. But for now, it's nice not to worry.

So, at long last, here they are, all 3 books in the Class of '93 trilogy!

Attorney Aiden Greene’s life has become one predictable routine of work, work, and more work punctuated by weekend visits with his twins. A blast from his Air Force special operations days changes all of that in an instant. He winds up in the arms of his one true love and on the run for his very life.

Major Erika Dalton is one of the best officers in the history of the ultra-secret Air Force Security Agency. That’s one of the reasons she’s been assigned to protect Aiden Greene from an escaped Latin American drug lord intent on exacting retribution.

Except she can’t keep her mind on her assignment. Or her hands off of Aiden, despite the fact that back in the Spring of ’93, back at the United States Air Force Academy, he shattered her heart. Has fate given her a chance to reclaim what she lost all those years ago?

A serial killer is loose on the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania, killing couples in their tents, and the local jurisdictions have asked the FBI for help.

Hot shot Special Agent Braden Powell is anxious to hit the Trail and start camping. He hopes that the high profile case will boost his standing at the Agency, proving that he deserved the assignment after leaving the Air Force. He’s even more anxious to spend time in close quarters with his sexy new partner.

Special Agent Katrina Boyd is anything but pleased to be on a remote assignment with a loose cannon. Eight young people are dead and she’s stuck with a maverick for a partner on a case that could propel her FBI career to the next level. Compounding the disaster is the fact that her traitorous body is more than excited at the thought of sleeping next to the handsome Agent night after night.

Appearances can be deceiving.

Major Chadwick Monroe knows that all too well. He is the best fighter pilot the Air Force has ever seen and he is about to defect with the military’s newest weapon. Chad has a mission very few people know about – he’s an officer with the ultra-secret Air Force Security Agency, trying to thwart a Latin American terrorist organization. He has no time for a woman in his life, or so he thinks.

Casey Wilkes doesn’t trust men in general, fighter pilots in particular. The divorced single mother burns the candle at both ends to make ends meet and provide a life for her young son. The last thing she needs or wants in that life is another jet jockey, even one who draws her in and captivates her heart. Especially one who exposes her to cutthroat blackguards. Now she just has to convince her heart.

Veterans Day Remembrances (and a GC giveaway!)

It's going to be a busy 3 days in the Forella household!

Today is my son's birthday. Please take a minute to wish a very happy and healthy birthday to my favorite 1LT!  This is a picture of my handsome son and his beautiful wife at his promotion in July. I'm so very proud of the man he's become! I wish I could take some credit for it, but I really can't, because he's been amazing since the day he was born. But don't tell him I said that, it'll go to his head!

Then the very next day is my birthday! And since I'm such a kind and generous soul (no snickering allowed from the peanut gallery!), I'll be giving one lucky winner a present! Everyone who likes me on Facebook by Nov. 11 at 11:59 pm will be entered to win a $25 gift card from Amazon!  :)  I'll announce the winner on my Facebook page on the evening of Nov. 12.

Click here for a chance to win!

And then, November 11. Veterans Day. It's more than just a 3-day weekend for my son's birthday. Not for me and my birthday, but for him. It's a chance to honor those serving in our armed forces and to remember those who have served both at home and abroad. I'll be saying a special prayer today for three members of my family and my extended family who are currently serving in the US armed forces today. First on my list, of course, is my favorite CONUS-based 1LT. Thank goodness he's not in harm's way on a daily basis, I don't think my heart could handle it! My poor heart goes through enough worrying about my favorite 2LT and my favorite Army Ranger! I about have a stroke whenever I hear something on the news. I don't know how his mother stays sane! And then there's my favorite soon-to-be Army helicopter pilot. Who is the sister of my favorite Army Ranger. Good grief, another one to worry about! I never thought I'd see the day when I worried about Army personnel.  :)  Their mother is my dearest friend, the friend who's been with me the longest, but I can't say my oldest friend because I'm a month older than her and she never lets me forget it! It's a good thing I love her!

I stole, er, borrowed this picture from her Facebook page.

But my list isn't complete yet. I'll be saying a prayer in memory of my maternal grandfather who served in the Navy in WWII. And one in memory of my paternal uncle who just passed away who served in the Air Force. And another one in honor of my other paternal uncle who served in the Navy. And I'll be saying a very special prayer in honor of my father who served in the Air Force for 25 years. I love you, Daddy!

Please say a prayer, give thanks, or show your respect in any way you see fit. Some gave all and all gave some.

And don't forget! Deadly Briefs, Book 1 of the Class of '93 Trilogy will soon be available for Kindle! No word yet on books 2 and 3, but they're coming!

A real life hero

I've been thinking a lot lately (this usually elicits a snide comment from DH, but I digress), what with the nasty terror threat we're under. Thinking about a young man who is somewhere in Afghanistan right now doing who knows what. This young man is a US Army Ranger. Isn't he handsome?

He started college in 2008 and joined Army ROTC. In the middle of two wars, he joined the Army. "Why?" I asked his mother. "It's what he wants to do," she replied. He's not stupid. He was accepted at West Point twice! But I had to wonder. He excelled academically and in ROTC. He graduated in 2012 and after some initial training, he started Ranger training. "Why?" I asked his mother. I got the same reply I got the first time. "It's what he wants to do."

I followed his progress through Ranger training. His mother dutifully detailed his progress based on a book he'd given her. All I have to say is HOLY CRAP! I am beyond impressed with what this young man and his classmates and the classes before him accomplished.

Ranger training

And now he's deployed. Of course he is, he's an elite Army Ranger. This is what he trained for. He calls it a business trip. HA I pray for him every day. I've known this young man all his life. I've known his mother almost all my life.

I can't answer "why" he's trained as hard as he has to go into danger, willingly go into danger. I don't know what he'd say if I asked him "why." I need to ask him that some day.

When I think of him and his brothers and sisters in arms, across all branches of the military, it clarifies for me why I write military heroes. It goes beyond a handsome face and a buff body in a uniform, although that doesn't hurt.

What's not to love about a man (or woman) who puts the safety of his country and its citizens ahead of his own safety. This is a person, who, even with the knowledge that he (or she) may end up in the heat of the battle, still makes the commitment, voluntarily, to something greater than himself (or herself). I don't understand it. But I am oh so grateful.

I get all kinds of good shivers just thinking about the intensity that comes with that level of selfless commitment. And when that intensity is turned on the heroine...YUM! Then there's the duty and honor that are such a part of our military personnel. It doesn't get turned off when the uniform comes off (not going there!!). Our heroines reap the benefits of those values.

Our heroine is very lucky women, indeed, when the hero turns his attention in her direction!

And we're all very lucky that these men are more than just figments of our imagination.

If you're so inclined, I know I would appreciate any prayers, thoughts, and good wishes for my Ranger. His mother would appreciate it, too. If you're inclined to help out my Ranger and his unit with cards or goodies, feel free to email me at FeliciaForella at comcast dot net.

Guest Author Donna Michaels

Happy Release Day! Thank you, FTLOMR for having me here again. I’m happy to guest blog today to talk about my brand new military romance which happens to be FREE today through Sunday!
Hello, I’m author of romaginative fiction Donna Michaels, and I love military men…I mean, romance…military romance! Okay, and men. So much so, I married one. My husband has been in the National Guard for over thirty years, and full time for almost twenty. It was only natural the military would spill into my writing.

Besides my husband, I’ve met many heroes over the years, all ages, races, sexes, and do my best to honor them in my writing. As always, a big thank you goes out to our troops. I’m honored to be a part of a wonderful group of authors who, like me, write about these heroes.

Romance through the H’s—Hot, Humorous & Heartwarming are what you’ll find in my novels and SHE DOES KNOW JACK has all three. It was great to revisit my hero Capt. Jack ‘Dodger’ Anderson, a former Army Ranger who provides security on the set of a reality TV show where his brother is the groom and receiving threats.

(Formerly released as Meet Your Mate, this book has been updated, heat level upped to hot, with over 20k words added.)

Today is Release Day for SHE DOES KNOW JACK and I’m happy to offer it for FREE the next three days.

Security specialist, Brielle Chapman reluctantly agrees to help her uncle by going undercover as a contestant on the Meet Your Mate reality show. Having nearly failed on a similar assignment, she needs to prove she still has a future in the business. But when the brother of the groom turns out to be Dodger, the only one-nighter she ever had—while in disguise from a prior undercover case—her job becomes harder. Does he recognize her? And how can she investigate with their sizzling attraction fogging her brain?

Former Army Ranger Capt. Jack ‘Dodger’ Anderson would rather run naked through a minefield in the Afghan desert than participate in a reality television show, but when his brother the groom begins to receive threats, Jack quickly becomes his sibling’s shadow. As if the investigation isn’t baffling enough, he has to contend with the addition of a beautiful and vaguely familiar new contestant.
But when deceits come to light, and the case is solved, can he overcome the lies to meet his own mate?

Excerpt:
“You’re leaving. Now.”
“What?” She blinked. Several times. “No. I’m not going anywhere.”
Or wasting precious time thinking about their past encounter. It was high time she put the case first. Concentrated on the threat and the culprit. Not Jack.
“Don’t you get it?” He advanced toward her, backing her into a wall. Again. “Whoever’s been threatening Matthew obviously wants you off the show.”
“Too bad.” She shrugged, not at all worried, and just a bit peeved at herself. “And you should be happy.”
His gaze narrowed into a deep frown. “Happy? Why?”
“I’m obviously making someone angry, and you know what happens to people when they get angry, don’t you?”
Begrudging admiration filled his eyes. “They make mistakes.”
“Exactly.” She nodded with a smile. “And if we play our cards right, we’ll catch the offender in no time.
“We?” He shook his head and grasped her shoulders. “Oh, hell no. There is no we, Ms. Bennett. This isn’t a game.”
“Yes—we,” she corrected, lifting her chin. Heat seared her skin from under his grasp, but she applauded herself for resisting the urge to press closer. “As I see it, I have two choices, Mr. Anderson. I can either cower and leave the show, or stand my ground. I’m much better at standing.”
His gaze darkened to a smoky blue before dropping to her mouth. Ah, heaven help her. Not that again. Her heart did an impromptu fire drill—stopped, dropped, then rolled.
All thoughts of the show, threats and suspects clouded as her body responded to Jack’s nearness. That pressing-closer urge grew stronger. Much stronger. She only had to lean forward and they’d be heart-to-heart, body-to-body.
Good parts to good parts.
A second later, his palms hit the wall on either side of her head. He did the pressing. His hot, hard, solid body pushed her into the wall and warm breath washed over her as he let out a curse while lowering his face towards hers…
“Jack! Jack, what room are you in?” A deep voice penetrated her fuzzy head.
With lightening speed, the sexy former Ranger jumped back and shook his head as if that would clear it.
Good luck, buddy, she thought, drawing in a breath, trying to remove her own cobwebs. Damn, that was close. Too close. Disappointment, mixed with guilt, calmed her libido. She turned and headed for the bathroom without glancing at the tempting man just as help arrived.
The walking wall was first through the door. And according to Uncle Franco, her escort from last night was also a former Ranger. She’d hazard a guess his whole team consisted of former Rangers.
Needing a moment to recover before facing said team and her uncle’s men—who had orders to pretend she was a stranger—Brielle closed the door and splashed water on her heated cheeks. Cold water. Very cold water.
“You’re an idiot,” she mumbled into the towel. But it wasn’t her fault. That man was hot enough to melt steel.

Thanks for reading. Don’t forget, you can get Jack for FREE for the next three day! Please pass the word and share a sexy former Ranger with your friends.
