Life After the Military

Hey, everyone! I have been in hibernation for the last few months as we get settled in our new home in Virginia. Life has definitely has changed but for the better. I do not regret our 20 years in the military. While I was not thrilled with living in Alabama, I was very happy for Les. He had a job he loved working at the AF International Officers School. He truly enjoyed the students he met over the last 2 years. But, we were ready for a new start. We met a lot of great people, expanded our horizons, and now...we get our time.

Since we moved 8 times in 20 years, and we always threw together a house we have been taking our time getting the house we built in order.
There have been some settling in pains and I am still dealing with the health issues I had last year. Still, it is much easier to deal with them now because we don't have have been working, and have exciting news for you Santini and Semper Fi folks.

Counting Down the Days!

We only have a few days left as an active duty family. After 20 years in the military, my husband Les is retiring and we are moving back up north. (Bugs die! Bugs die!) Friday he will have his retirement ceremony. Then, next week is the pack up and we head out of town.

20 years ago Les came to Maxwell AFB for Officer Training School. It is really kind of like a whole circle of life kind of thing to have his career end here.  And I want to celebrate. Semper Fi Marines

When I set out to write the Santinis, I expected to just write one series. I wasn't planning a big series because I have Harmless and that overwhelms me at times. I wanted a short series released fast. Then, while writing Leo's book, I met MJ and then Jack. Jack Johnson--along with the other two older brothers of the Johnson clan--are all Marines. The moment I wrote the first scene with Jack I knew it readers would want his story. Knowing he was injured in his last assignment was enough to have readers emailing about him and his story. So, coming this August, I will start releasing Semper Fi Marines, a three book series. These might be a little longer than The Santinis, but I have to write the first one to see. They will not release a week apart, but maybe two to three weeks apart. I am super excited about them!

Leo Santini is a man who always has a plan. It is the way to live a well-ordered life. He never planned on dealing with the hardheaded physical therapist who is taking care of his friend. He definitely never planned on being so totally infatuated with her.

Maryanne Johnson doesn't have time for a romance—especially with a military man. Sure, Leo is drop dead sexy, but more than one man in a uniform had hurt her before. Unfortunately, she can't seem to resist him or his kisses. It doesn't help that the man is as sweet as he is sexy. Falling for him is easy, but she does her best to keep herself from admitting it to him.

Leo knows she wants to keep things simple but when a Santini is in love nothing will stop him from achieving his goal—even the hardheaded woman he loves.

Military Brat to Wife to Writer

I will be honest with you. I never really planned on writing military romance. I am a military brat and a military wife, so I don't see much that is romantic about the military. Don't get me wrong. I love to read military romance, but trying to make it romantic myself, I wasn't sure I could do that. I was worried it would end up in a rant about how every time something goes majorly wrong, DH is on TDY.

I had written former military folks here and there, but never active duty. There is a different feel to an AD hero or heroine. Your life is not your own, therefore the life of those you love is not their own either. So, I had avoided it. Then, a couple of authors, Alyssa Brooks and Karen Monroe, came to me with an idea. Triplets who were military brats who swore never to marry military. That I could get behind because I was so that girl once upon a time. Operation Love was a blast to write with two other authors and I started to see there was a part of me that might want to write military romances.  Not enough but it was a start.

Flash forward from 2005 to 2011. I was writing A Little Harmless Submission and Malachi Dupree popped up. He had been mentioned in a few books but he had never been on the "page" so to speak. Since I had started my own publishing at that point, I knew there was a place for him and his friends in a book. A Little Harmless Military Romance was born.

Infatuation released November 2011. It was odd that people loved them so much. Or, at least, it was to me, but many of the emails and comments from readers told me that people wanted more of them. I had not really planned five right off the bat, but the lure of showing people the real behind the scenes lives was a little too much to resist. With our active duty military life winding down (SEPTEMBER!!!!!!!), I feel more comfortable writing military romance. Later this year Craving and Relentless will release, and this May, I decided to pay an homage to our military lives by releasing The Santinis.

After twenty years a military wife - not to mention my years a military
dependent - I wanted to write about a family who gave their lives for their country. Each book will feature a place we lived during the last twenty years.  Understand, at least from my point of view, that when you agree to go into the military, you are giving over your life. For two to thirty years...your life is not your own. And for military brats, four brothers, to do that is amazing. You know the problems that go along with the commitment. Knowing that, all four brothers went into the military. So, you know that men like that are not going to love easily. I wanted to explore their dynamic as brothers and in their relationships with women. I wanted to give them their happily ever afters because, people who serve in that capacity definitely deserve it.
